Man shot during Trump assassination attempt at 2024 campaign rally dies

James Copenhaver, a 76-year-old resident of Moon Township, passed away on Wednesday, surrounded by his family, following an assassination attempt on then-presidential candidate Donald Trump at a 2024 campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13, 2024. Copenhaver was one of three individuals shot during the incident, suffering grave injuries.

His attorney, Joseph Feldman, expressed deep gratitude for the outpouring of love and support Copenhaver received during his long recovery process. Feldman also highlighted Copenhaver's remarkable strength and resolve throughout his challenging journey, and remembered him as a devoted family man and a veteran who served his country with great dedication.

Trump paid tribute to Copenhaver as a "true American Patriot" on social media, expressing his deep sorrow over the loss. House Republicans and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro offered condolences to Copenhaver's family, emphasizing the need to rise above political violence and seek a better future for the nation. The gunman, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, fired up to eight shots from a nearby building before being killed by a Secret Service sharpshooter.

Another victim, 50-year-old firefighter Corey Comperatore, died shielding his family from the gunfire.
