Man shot and wounded during Trump assassination attempt dies in Pennsylvania

James Copenhaver, a 76-year-old man, suffered severe injuries during an assassination attempt on former candidate Donald Trump during a 2024 campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Shot by a 20-year-old gunman from a nearby rooftop, Copenhaver was hit in the arm and abdomen. His injuries led to multiple surgeries, including a colon transection, and left him with lingering kidney and leg issues.

Copenhaver, along with two others, was among three people shot at the event. Two survived, including David Dutch, while Corey Comperatore, who shielded his family, was killed. Copenhaver died Wednesday at Allegheny Health Network’s West Penn hospital in Pittsburgh, surrounded by loved ones, according to a statement from the Allegheny county medical examiner.

His lawyer, Joseph Feldman, revealed that Copenhaver had died from his injuries, though it was not explicitly stated if his death was directly related. Prior to his death, Copenhaver and his wife had filed a lawsuit in June against the federal government, alleging inadequate security provided by the Secret Service and Department of Homeland Security.
