Man shot during Trump assassination attempt at 2024 rally dies

James Copenhaver, the 76-year-old man shot during the 2024 assassination attempt on Donald Trump, has died. He was struck in the arm and abdomen, leaving him with permanent injuries that required multiple surgeries including the transection of his colon. Copenhaver walked with a cane due to lingering kidney and leg damage. Two other attendees were also shot during the incident - David Dutch, who survived, and Corey Comperatore, who shielded his family and was killed.

Copenhaver and his wife, Marianne, sued the federal government in June, alleging inadequate security provided by the Secret Service and Department of Homeland Security at the rally. The lawsuit described Copenhaver's injuries as debilitating, grievous, permanent, and life-altering. The family's statement emphasized Copenhaver as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who instilled hard work, integrity, and service to others in his children.
