Gunmen kill 17 in South Africa bar shooting, 15 wounded: police

On Sunday, South African police reported that eight gunmen armed with assault rifles killed 17 individuals and wounded 15 at a bar located west of Johannesburg. The attackers allegedly searched patrons for their cellphones before fleeing the scene in two unidentified vehicles. The victims comprised 13 males and four females, though the motive behind the attack remained unclear.

Police have dispatched a team of detectives and specialized units to track down and apprehend the suspects. Earlier the same day, another shooting occurred at an entertainment venue in a township near Cape Town, where gunmen killed 10 people and injured 11 others. South Africa, home to approximately 62 million people, grapples with a significant crime problem, boasting one of the world's highest murder rates, with an average of 60 deaths daily.

In March, the government deployed soldiers to high-crime areas in Johannesburg to aid law enforcement in combating the rampant violence, which President Cyril Ramaphosa has labeled one of the country's most pressing threats.
