South Africa faces a challenging diplomatic situation with the United States, and the country must decide whether to cater to every external charge or speak as a sovereign nation. The relationship with the US is crucial, given shared interests in trade, investment, technology, education, and diplomacy. However, South Africa must not surrender its ability to determine its own laws, economic policies, or international relations.

Disagreements with Washington do not equate to becoming anti-American, and the distinction must be made more confidently.

The recent debate surrounding US Ambassador Leo Brent Bozell's criticism of a Constitutional Court judgment has highlighted the need for ambassadors to recognize the legitimacy of South African courts. The US has outlined five priorities in its engagement with South Africa, which include addressing rural crime, condemning inciting rhetoric, ensuring fair compensation in expropriation policies, expanding cooperation in digital technology and critical minerals, and tackling B-BBEE concerns.

South Africa can engage these issues while maintaining sovereignty and determining its own political, economic, and constitutional direction.

South Africa's strategic position offers the opportunity to engage with various global powers, including the US, China, Russia, and the Global South. The country can maintain diplomatic relations with these nations while having disagreements without defining any of them as adversaries. South Africa possesses significant weight in the international arena, given its industrial economy, financial center status, and role as a major trading nation and source of minerals. Its companies operate throughout Africa, and its financial institutions have regional influence.

Despite challenges such as infrastructure constraints, crime, and weaknesses in public administration, South Africa remains a sophisticated economy with constitutional resilience and a continental reach through its private sector. The country should approach international conversations as an active participant with interests in American investment, technology access, market opportunities, infrastructure investment, and employment creation.
