South Africa mass shooting: 17 killed, 15 injured in Johannesburg, police say

Eight armed men with assault rifles opened fire at a Johannesburg bar on Saturday evening, killing 17 people and injuring 15 others, according to police reports. The gunmen reportedly searched patrons and took their cellphones before fleeing the scene in two unidentified vehicles. The victims consisted of 13 males and four females, though the motive behind the attack remained unclear.

Police have dispatched a team of detectives and specialized units to locate and apprehend the suspects. In a separate incident early Sunday in a Cape Town township, gunmen killed 10 and wounded 11 at an entertainment venue. South Africa, with its high prevalence of both legal and illegal firearms, experiences frequent shootings often linked to gang rivalry and disputes over informal businesses.

The nation, home to approximately 62 million people, ranks among the world's highest murder rates, averaging around 60 deaths daily. President Cyril Ramaphosa recently deployed soldiers to Johannesburg to assist in combating the pervasive crime issue, which the leader has labeled one of the country's most significant challenges.
