NASA launches powerful new Roman Space Telescope from Florida

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida, August 30 - NASA's Roman Space Telescope embarked on a $4 billion mission to unravel cosmic enigmas such as dark energy and dark matter. Aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket launched from Kennedy Space Center, the telescope is set to orbit Earth at Lagrange Point 2, approximately 1.6 million kilometers away.

Planned for a five-year mission, Roman's advanced wide-angle lens complements the deep views provided by the James Webb Space Telescope. With the ability to survey our Milky Way galaxy in a single month, Roman will construct a comprehensive 3D map of over two billion galaxies during its initial year-long survey. By studying dark matter and dark energy, Roman aims to bring humanity closer to understanding these mysterious cosmic components.

Roman also stands poised to discover thousands of exoplanets, potentially unveiling new planetary systems similar to our own. Despite efforts from the previous administration to cut its funding, Roman's launch occurred nine months ahead of schedule.
