NASA launches powerful new Roman Space Telescope from Florida

NASA's groundbreaking Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope was launched from Florida on Sunday in a mission to unravel some of the most profound questions in astrophysics and cosmology. This $4 billion project, carried aloft by a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket, is designed to investigate phenomena such as dark energy and dark matter, test gravity on cosmic scales, and search for exoplanets.

The Roman Space Telescope was launched through clear skies, despite initial weather concerns. It will journey towards an orbital location called Lagrange Point 2, located about a million miles from Earth. The telescope's mission is set for five years, with the potential for an additional five years of operation due to available fuel.

NASA's Roman Space Telescope aims to build upon the capabilities of other orbiting observatories like the James Webb Space Telescope and the Hubble Space Telescope. While Hubble and James Webb offer deep views of the universe, Roman will provide panoramic views, akin to a wide-angle camera lens. In fact, one month of Roman observations can survey our entire Milky Way galaxy, a task that would take about a century with Hubble.

The telescope's wide-angle lens and sharp vision will allow it to create the most comprehensive 3D map of the universe to date, aiding in the understanding of dark energy and dark matter. Estimated to make up about 68% and 27% of the universe respectively, dark energy and dark matter are mysterious components that could be unraveled with Roman's observations. Additionally, Roman is expected to discover thousands of new exoplanets, offering the first statistical census of planetary systems similar to our own.
