NASA launches Ksh558B telescope to space

NASA has successfully launched a Ksh558 billion telescope into space to further its quest for understanding the mysteries of the universe. The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope embarked on a million-mile journey from Florida's Kennedy Space Centre on Sunday, August 30, 2026. Its primary mission involves searching for exoplanets and shedding light on planetary formation.

The Roman telescope, named after the agency's first chief of astronomy who passed away in 2018, is significantly more powerful than the Hubble Space Telescope and will complement the Hubble and James Webb space telescopes in NASA's storied history of space exploration. With a 300-megapixel infrared camera and a coronagraph for blocking starlight, the Roman telescope will capture larger patches of sky than Hubble and provide detailed images of planets around them.

The telescope will operate at Lagrange point 2, a million miles away from Earth, collaborating with the Hubble and Webb telescopes to offer a more comprehensive view of the cosmos. NASA expects the Roman telescope's images, which will start arriving in early 2027, to uncover new insights into dark matter, dark energy, and exoplanets.

This flagship mission, spanning five years (with potential extension to 10), is designed to address fundamental questions about the nature of our universe.
