Typhoon Dolphin weakens but disrupts travel in east China

Typhoon Dolphin weakened over the weekend but still disrupted transportation in eastern China. Over 1,000 flights were canceled and more than a million people were evacuated, according to China's National Meteorological Centre. The typhoon made two landfalls on the coast of Zhejiang province, bringing heavy rain and forcing evacuations.

As the typhoon's power diminished, authorities lowered their warning level. However, the NMC warned that eastern and central China would continue to experience heavy rain. In Shanghai, two main passenger airports saw 943 flights canceled, and many local trains were suspended. Zhejiang's Ningbo international airport resumed operations but warned of potential delays and cancellations.

Hangzhou's subway services were restored on Monday morning, after suspending some train operations on Sunday. Northern China also faced extreme weather, with five districts in Beijing issuing red alerts for heavy rain and landslide risks. Typhoon Dolphin was the strongest storm to hit China this year, coming two weeks after Typhoon Noul struck southern Guangdong province. China faces increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events due to climate change.
