Typhoon Dolphin weakens but disrupts travel in east China

Typhoon Dolphin weakened but caused disruptions in travel across eastern China. The storm brought heavy rain on Monday, leading to flight cancellations and the suspension of public transport services. Shanghai's two main passenger airports canceled 943 flights, and many local trains were halted in the city. However, some cities, like Hangzhou, resumed subway services, while parts of eastern and southern Zhejiang were under a severe flash flood alert.

Despite the storm losing power after making two landfalls along the coast of Zhejiang province, the National Meteorological Centre warned that heavy rain would continue for the next day. Authorities issued a top-level alert over the weekend, resulting in over 1,000 flight cancellations and tens of thousands of evacuations. This marks the strongest storm to hit China this year, following the impact of Typhoon Noul two weeks prior.

The extreme weather has also affected southern and central China, particularly last month when Typhoon Maysak caused devastating floods, killing 39 people and injuring 331. Scientists warn that as the planet continues to heat up due to fossil fuel emissions, the intensity and frequency of such extreme weather events will increase.

China, being the world's biggest emitter of greenhouse gases, is also a global leader in renewable energy and aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.
