Flights cancelled, evacuations as Typhoon Dolphin hits China

Typhoon Dolphin made landfall in eastern China near Yuhuan City in Zhejiang Province, forcing thousands to evacuate and canceling hundreds of thousands of flights. Forecasters predicted heavy rainfall ranging from 200 to 400 millimeters over the coming days, with maximum wind speeds near 150 kilometers per hour at the time of landfall.

Authorities evacuated 390,000 people in Taizhou city and over 30,000 in Shanghai. The storm's outer subsiding air was expected to bring extreme heat to the region from today to Tuesday. In Okinawa, Japan, the typhoon caused seven minor injuries and left 5,290 households without electricity. In Taiwan, dozens of ferry services were suspended, and over 180 flights were canceled.

In the Philippines, five people were rescued and seven remained missing after a landslide caused by the storm. Typhoon Dolphin was issued a red alert by China's meteorological center, warning of extraordinary torrential rain and potential landslides. Many train services were suspended as a safety precaution. Scientists attribute the increasing frequency and intensity of such extreme weather events to human-driven climate change.
