Kemas expands preschool places for children with autism, 132 classes to open nationwide in Jan 2027

Melaka, September 27 - The Community Development Department (Kemas) plans to open 132 preschools for children with autism across the country next January, according to Kemas director-general Datuk Mohd Hanafiah Man. A screening process for admissions will commence shortly, in partnership with the Ministry of Health. Mohd Hanafiah expressed optimism that the initiative will benefit approximately 2,000 children with autism, acknowledging the high volume of parent applications.

Each class will accommodate a maximum of 15 children, aged between 10 and 15, with a teacher-to-student ratio of 3:7, as per established standards. Upon meeting the screening criteria, applicants must present a Persons with Disabilities (PwD) card issued by the Social Welfare Department (JKM). This requirement aligns the program with policies established by the Ministry of Education.

The Ministry of Education provides special allowances to children in these special classes, necessitating their registration with JKM to qualify for the support.
