Education Ministry extends deadline for 2026 SHS placement exercise

The Ministry of Education in Ghana has decided to extend the deadline for the 2026 Senior High School (SHS) placement exercise by at least one week. This extension aims to provide students with unresolved placement issues more time to secure their preferred schools before the September 18 reporting date. The additional week will allow students who are still undertaking self-placement or seeking changes to their residential status to complete the process ahead of the tight deadline.

Resolution centers across the country will continue to operate from Monday to Friday, actively working to handle outstanding cases. According to Hashmin Mohammed, Press Secretary to the Education Minister, significant progress has already been made in addressing the challenges faced during the placement exercise. Out of the 53,887 students who opted for self-placement, 33,726 have successfully self-placed themselves into various schools.

Moreover, at the 9,948 reported cases at the resolution centers nationwide, the Central Council for Secondary Schools Placement and Services (CSSPS) Secretariat has managed to resolve 4,531 cases so far.

Mohammed expressed optimism that the remaining cases will substantially reduce before students report to school on September 18. He emphasized that the resolution centers will remain open from Monday to Friday, with the hope that by the end of the week, the numbers will decrease significantly. This action comes as the 2026 SHS placement crisis is attributed to changes in the established model, as previously reported by Haruna Iddrisu, a former Deputy GES.
