Lee's bungled personnel picks hold back his agenda

President Lee Jae Myung is struggling to regain momentum in state affairs after a controversial Cabinet reshuffle failed to deliver the fresh start he anticipated in his second year in office. The reshuffle aimed to rejuvenate his administration, but instead it has been marred by a series of personnel controversies. Among the most contentious appointments was Rep. Yong Hye-in, who was nominated as minister of gender equality and family.

However, Yong's two-week tenure was cut short after she stepped down amid controversy, failing to alleviate broader concerns about the administration's personnel choices. Her nomination had reignited questions about the extent of influence wielded by Kim Hyun-ji, Lee's long-time aide and first deputy chief of staff, over personnel decisions and state affairs.

These concerns have persisted since Lee assumed office in June 2025. While the presidential office has denied any involvement of Kim Hyun-ji, the appointment of Yong Hye-in has sparked criticism of the administration's vetting process for new ministers. Another problematic appointment, that of Justice Minister nominee Kim Seung-won, is set to undergo confirmation proceedings on Tuesday, suggesting implicit endorsement from Cheong Wa Dae and the ruling Democratic Party.
