Put Malaysia first, Fahmi says amid calls for Umno's exit

KUALA LUMPUR: PKR has dismissed calls to remove Umno from the unity government, emphasizing that political leaders should prioritize the nation's interests over party loyalty. PKR's information chief, Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil, stated that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had made it clear that any government decision would be guided by what is best for the country, not personal emotions.

He reiterated this sentiment during the PKR congress in Melaka, stating, "We will think about the country and put the country first. That is what our guru has taught us." Fahmi faced inquiries about the government's stance on Umno's withdrawal from the unity government or the prime minister's decision to remove the party, dismissing the idea, asserting that differing views are common within any political party.

Leaders must lead by example, putting Malaysia first in all their actions, not just in leading a party or the country, he argued. Fahmi confirmed that cooperation among parties in the unity government remains strong, with regular cabinet meetings and collaborative efforts addressing various national challenges. The unity government's efforts to tackle economic issues, such as fuel supply and the Middle East conflict, demonstrate their commitment to putting Malaysia first, Fahmi emphasized.
