Fighting escalates in Strait of Hormuz as Iran claims strike on US ship

On Sunday, Iran announced that it had targeted an unmanned U.S. vessel attempting to breach the Strait of Hormuz, escalating tensions between the two nations. The U.S. has not yet verified the reported incident, which follows the previous day's strike by U.S. forces on three Iranian oil tankers in retaliation for a missile attack on Navy warships.

The conflict ignited on February 28 with joint U.S. and Israeli assaults on Iran, but intermittent fighting has continued since a ceasefire deal was announced in June. Recent confrontations aim to inflict military and economic damage as talks have reached a stalemate. The recent escalation follows the resumption of attacks between the U.S. and Iran last week, after a month of relative peace.

The Strait of Hormuz and Iranian communities along its coast have once again become primary targets. At least five individuals were reported killed earlier in the week during a U.S. bombing raid in southern Iran. The administration of President Trump seems to have adopted a dual strategy in handling the conflict, responding to attacks on the strait while targeting foreign financial institutions.
