Iran claims strike on US ship in Strait of Hormuz as fighting escalates

Iran claimed on Sunday that it had launched an attack on a U.S. vessel attempting to enter the Strait of Hormuz, escalating the recent spate of fighting between the two nations. This incident occurred just a day after the U.S. military reported striking three Iranian oil tankers in retaliation for a missile assault on Navy warships.

Tensions between the nations started in February when the U.S. and Israel targeted Iran, following a ceasefire announcement in June. Despite a period of relative calm, hostilities resumed last week, with the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding areas once again coming under attack. At least five individuals lost their lives during a U.S. bombing campaign in southern Iran earlier in the week.

The conflict has seen the U.S. and Iran exchange military strikes while targeting foreign financial institutions handling Iran's funds. Iran's new senior leaders have shown a willingness to stand firm despite years of sanctions, and the country has developed methods to circumvent them and continue exporting oil to maintain economic stability.

Iran's nuclear program, which sparked the war, was intended to be addressed in negotiations that ended abruptly after the U.S. and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding in mid-June. The U.S., along with Britain, France, and Germany, aim to refer Iran to the U.N. Security Council for non-compliance with nuclear nonproliferation obligations.

Instead, Tehran's new strategy focuses on the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil and natural gas route, previously considered an international waterway.
