Police arrest alleged drug mule en route to Hong Kong at OR Tambo

Police have arrested a 54-year-old South African man at OR Tambo International Airport, accused of attempting to smuggle drugs to Hong Kong. According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the suspect was intercepted after intelligence indicated he was planning to carry drugs on his person. The suspect's luggage was subsequently searched and found to contain suspected cocaine, though the exact weight and value have yet to be determined.

The individual is expected to face Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court, charged with drug trafficking. This arrest is part of a series of recent drug mule seizures at OR Tambo Airport, which have sparked discussions regarding South Africa's role as a significant hub for international drug trafficking. In a recent statement, SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk emphasized that the force is dedicated to dismantling drug trafficking networks through intelligence-driven operations and targeted actions at major entry points.

Acting National Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane reiterated that the police intercept substantial quantities of drugs each month, asserting that such successes send a clear message against South Africa becoming a transit point or market for illicit substances. The police are collaborating with their law enforcement allies to detect and dismantle these trafficking networks.
