Tanjung Lompat tragedy: Channel-like formation believed to strengthen currents

KOTA TINGGI - The terrain at Tanjung Lompat beach in Bandar Penawar, Malaysia, is believed to have a channel resembling a drain running through the sand, which may have contributed to strong currents that pulled four young students out to sea. Lieutenant Commander Mohamed Shafiee Bakar, Operations Officer for the Tanjung Sedili Maritime Zone Headquarters, explained that the beach's curved terrain, combined with rough waves and strong winds during the current monsoon transition, could exacerbate the situation.

The conditions, particularly when the tide was receding, could create a strong pull towards the sea, making it difficult for those unfamiliar with the area to identify potential dangers. Unlike gentler beaches, where waves usually break onto the shore, this stretch of coastline might cause water to recede back into the ocean, leading people to believe it was safe for swimming despite the high tide.

Shafiee noted that the ongoing monsoon transition and rough winds and waves could have further intensified the current. Surfing operator Ahmad Syahir Muhammad Zainudin added that the southerly winds and tidal movements in the area could generate powerful currents capable of pulling swimmers out to sea, posing a significant risk to visitors who are not familiar with the beach's conditions.

The presence of surfers in the waters often serves as rescuers, having helped save people in the past. Local politician Fauziah Misri revealed that the beach was not open to the public for recreational activities and was primarily used by fishermen. Tragically, yesterday, six teenagers - all aged 16 - encountered difficulties while swimming at Tanjung Lompat.

Two were rescued by bystanders, while two more were later found dead, and search and rescue operations are still underway for the remaining missing teens.
