King Charles to host Oman’s Sultan Haitham in October

King Charles III and Queen Camilla will host Sultan Haitham bin Tariq of Oman at Windsor Castle for a state visit next month, Buckingham Palace has announced. The visit is set to take place from October 20 to 22. The trip aims to highlight the close relationship between the UK and Oman, as well as Oman's significant diplomatic role in the Middle East.

This visit comes amidst escalating hostilities in the ongoing US-Iran war. Oman has been working diligently to maintain its position as an intermediary with Iran, participating in efforts to restore commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. This waterway is crucial as it transports a large portion of the world's seaborne oil and gas exports, making maritime security in the region a top priority for Britain and its allies.

The UK and Oman have a long-standing history of close defense and security ties, while also maintaining diplomatic channels with nations on opposing sides of Middle Eastern conflicts. The bilateral relationship encompasses various areas such as trade, education, culture, defense, and diplomacy. Britain has also invested in military infrastructure at Oman's strategic Duqm port, enhancing Royal Navy operations in the Gulf and the broader Indian Ocean.

The state visit follows a previous private meeting between Sultan Haitham and King Charles at Windsor Castle in July of the previous year. During this meeting, Sultan Haitham also had a formal encounter with then-Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London, resulting in both countries agreeing to strengthen cooperation in defense, energy, and technology.

With this upcoming visit, Britain is anticipated to emphasize its commitment to preserving this vital relationship in the Gulf during a period of regional strife.
