More than 1,000 dead from catastrophic Nepal-China floods

KATHMANDU, Nepal - The death toll from catastrophic flooding in Nepal and China surpassed 1,000 on Tuesday, authorities reported, as rescue teams scrambled to assist communities isolated by the disaster. The Nepalese disaster agency confirmed 987 fatalities, with 3,916 people still missing, including 583 foreigners. Chinese officials reported 16 deaths in their latest update on Sunday.

The disaster unfolded with a chain of events high in the Himalayas. A sudden glacial collapse unleashed vast quantities of rock, ice, and meltwater onto the valleys below, giving rise to devastating floods downstream. Satellite imagery analysis suggests the collapse involved the failure of bedrock beneath a glacier in the Himalayan region, generating a seismic event equivalent to a magnitude 5.2 earthquake.
