Class of 2030 begins Northwestern journey with vision, curiosity, and community

The Class of 2030 officially joined Northwestern University in Qatar as they commenced their undergraduate journey at the institution's 19th Convocation ceremony. During the event, Dean and CEO Marwan M. Kraidy emphasized the importance of basira, an Arabic concept embodying insight, vision, and moral discernment. Kraidy elaborated that basira extends beyond mere insight, encompassing intellectual clarity, ethical judgment, and a profound understanding of deeper truths.

Kraidy highlighted the significance of basira in an era of rapid technological advancement and information dissemination, where artificial intelligence and digital media shape perceptions and interactions. He stressed three key aspects of basira: imagination, integrity, and wisdom, urging students to view their education as a journey of personal growth beyond the mere accumulation of knowledge.

In his role as Northwestern University's Provost, Erik Luijten echoed Kraidy's sentiments, emphasizing the importance of curiosity, asking questions, and embracing the possibility of making mistakes. Luijten, who joined Northwestern in July 2026, related to the new students' experience of embarking on a fresh academic adventure. He advised students to maintain their inquisitive nature, seek assistance when needed, and not be intimidated by potential errors.

Student Government President Timaa Kamar, representing the Class of 2027, shared her perspective on the evolving aspects of university life. Reflecting on her transition from a freshman to her final year at NU-Q, Kamar underscored the profound impact of the relationships and shared experiences that have enriched her time at Northwestern.
