More than 1,000 dead from catastrophic Nepal-China floods

KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) — Over 1,000 fatalities have been reported in catastrophic floods that struck Nepal and China, according to authorities. Rescue efforts are underway to assist communities isolated by the disaster. In Nepal, 987 deaths have been recorded, with 3,916 people still missing, including 583 foreigners. Chinese officials have confirmed 16 fatalities in their latest update from Sunday.

The disaster began in the Himalayas with a glacial collapse, releasing rock, ice, and meltwater into valleys below, causing powerful floods downstream. Scientists studying satellite imagery suggest the collapse may have involved the failure of bedrock beneath a glacier in the Himalayan region, registering as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake.
