More than 1,000 dead from catastrophic Nepal-China floods

KATHMANDU, Nepal — The death toll from devastating floods that struck Nepal and China has surpassed 1,000, according to authorities, as rescue efforts continue to reach communities isolated by the disaster. Nepal's disaster management agency reported 987 fatalities, with 3,916 people still missing, including 583 foreigners. In China, 16 deaths were reported on Sunday. So far, 11,814 individuals have been rescued, according to Nepalese sources.

Emergency responders have been utilizing helicopters and other aircraft to access stranded communities where infrastructure has been severely damaged by the flooding and landslides. The calamity began on August 26, starting with a glacial collapse in the Himalayas. This event caused a massive release of rock, ice, and meltwater, which triggered catastrophic floods downstream.

Scientists analyzing satellite imagery determined that the glacial collapse involved the failure of bedrock beneath a glacier, generating a seismic event equivalent to a magnitude 5.2 earthquake. The resulting torrent of water and debris flowed into rivers traversing Tibet and Nepal, causing swift and dramatic rises in water levels.

The flooding resulted in widespread destruction, engulfing homes, buildings, roads, and bridges, and carrying mud and rocks downstream. Rescue teams are still actively searching for thousands of people who remain unaccounted for, as of Tuesday. Moreover, rescue crews are working to provide aid to survivors in areas where transportation routes have been damaged or cut off.

For the rescuers, the primary focus remains on locating the approximately 900 workers missing from 12 hydropower projects damaged by the flash floods. About 500 of these workers are believed to be trapped inside tunnels.
