Dutch court sentences man to life over Rwanda genocide

In a landmark decision, a Dutch court has sentenced a Dutch-Rwandan man, Eugene N, to life in prison for his role in the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. The 66-year-old was convicted of war crimes and the crime of genocide, having acted with genocidal intent. According to the court, N held a position of authority at the time, overseeing approximately 1,000 people in Mbazi, southern Rwanda.

During the genocide, N allegedly instructed Hutus not to let any Tutsis escape from a stadium, where they were subjected to stone pelting, gunfire, and grenades. Survivors were killed with clubs and machetes. Prior to this incident, N had witnessed people looting and setting homes ablaze.

In 2020, a Dutch investigation conducted over 30 witness interviews, leading to N's arrest in 2024. Despite denying all charges, N's lawyers have indicated they will likely appeal the verdict. The court emphasized that a lifelong sentence is necessary to acknowledge the profound suffering endured by the victims and their families.
