Dialogue, diplomacy must be prioritised in Cambodia-Thailand issue – Johari

Malaysia's Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul has emphasized the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in resolving the Cambodia-Thailand border issue, stating that it is crucial for maintaining regional peace and stability within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean). During his meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on the sidelines of the Second Inter-Parliamentary Speakers Conference in Phnom Penh, Johari discussed the border issue, which was among the matters addressed.

He noted that Malaysia empathizes with Cambodia's concerns regarding the situation along the border and its impact on local residents.

Johari reiterated that dialogue and diplomacy should always be given precedence in addressing differences among Asean member states. The Malaysia Prime Minister expressed commitment to supporting efforts aimed at bringing all parties back to the negotiating table, with a focus on preserving regional peace and stability. During their meeting, both countries discussed strengthening bilateral ties, covering areas such as parliamentary cooperation, economy, human capital development, and youth empowerment.

Youth from both nations were encouraged to build ties through exchange programs and participation in the economic, social, and inter-parliamentary spheres. Johari highlighted the potential for expanding cooperation in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), including through skills training, institutional exchanges, and industry collaboration.

In addition, Johari appreciated the Cambodian government's support for Malaysian companies operating in the country, fostering a favorable environment for the Malaysian business community.

He concluded by reaffirming Malaysia's dedication to maintaining close cooperation with Cambodia to bolster long-standing bilateral ties, all in pursuit of peace, stability, and shared prosperity within the Asean region.
