SA records decline in murder, contact crimes in first quarter

South Africa has experienced a decline in murder and various serious contact crimes during the first quarter of the 2026/2027 financial year, according to Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia. The minister attributed this progress to intelligence-led policing, targeted operations, and improved cooperation among law enforcement agencies.

Cachalia made this announcement at a media briefing in Pretoria, emphasizing that while violent crime continues to pose challenges, there are indications of improvement. He reiterated the South African Police Service's commitment to combating crime, highlighting the country's ongoing efforts to modernize and utilize technology for enhanced crime prevention, investigation, and service delivery.
