Dutch court jails man for life in Rwandan genocide case

A Dutch court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for his role in the 1994 Rwandan genocide, in which an estimated 3,000 Tutsis were killed. The presiding judge emphasized the severity of the crime, stating that only a life sentence was fitting for war crimes and genocide. The suspect, identified only as Eugene N., was a Dutch national of Rwandan origin who allegedly participated in the massacre by torching houses, looting possessions, and personally throwing a grenade into a football stadium in Mbazi, southern Rwanda, where victims sought refuge.

Prosecutors alleged that N. was directly involved in the killings of innocent people. Despite denying the charges and claiming to be a victim himself, losing relatives in the genocide, the suspect was arrested in 2024 after Dutch prosecutors opened their own investigation in 2020. The 1994 Rwandan genocide claimed the lives of around 800,000 people, primarily the Tutsi minority.
