Dutch court hands life sentence to Rwandan man for genocide role

A Dutch court has handed a Rwandan man a life sentence for his involvement in the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, inflicting significant suffering on the victims and their families. Eugene N, the suspect, helped ransack and burn homes in two predominantly Tutsi communities before aiding a mob that attacked approximately 3,000 Tutsis seeking refuge in a stadium.

The court found his actions a "significant lack of respect for human dignity and for human life." The court emphasized that only a life sentence would suffice for the immense suffering caused. Eugene N, who fled the Netherlands in 1998 and later became a Dutch citizen, was arrested in 2024 after prosecutors opened their case in 2020.

He denied his involvement, claiming he attempted to stop the violence and lost many relatives. Prosecutors argued that the suspect's crimes warranted a life sentence. Rwanda suffered over 800,000 deaths during the genocide, perpetrated by Hutu ethnonationalist leaders in just three months. While a UN tribunal prosecuted top organizers, European courts have prosecuted lower-level suspects under universal jurisdiction.
