Nepal floods sweep 5 elephants into a UP river. Here’s how they were rescued

A herd of elephants found themselves in perilous waters as strong currents swept through the Kaudiyala River in Uttar Pradesh, prompting concern among onlookers. The video, reportedly taken in Bahraich area, showed four to five elephants struggling against the powerful river flow near the Kailashpuri barrage. Forest department officials confirmed that three adult elephants and two calves were in the current and needed assistance to return to safety.

Upon receiving news of the incident, Indian Forest Service officer Ramesh Pandey shared details of the rescue operation. He revealed that at around 10:20 AM on August 25, 2026, the Katarniaghat Range Headquarters received an alert through the Kailashpuri Barrier. The message informed them that a herd of elephants—comprising three adults and two calves—were being swept away by the strong current. The adults attempted to follow the calves for protection, but even they struggled against the force of the river.

Acting swiftly, the forest team made their way to the Girjapuri Barrage after receiving the alert. They collaborated with the irrigation department, which promptly closed the barrage gates to counter the strong river flow. With the current subsiding, the adult elephants regained their composure and guided the two young calves to safety.

According to Pandey, the herd had reached the vicinity of the barrage gates before the forest officials began their efforts. To drive the herd back into the forest, officials created noise and commotion, effectively leading the herd away from the hazardous area.

The successful rescue of the elephants was met with widespread relief and praise on social media. Many users expressed gratitude towards the rescue team and the irrigation department for their quick and efficient actions.
