Typhoon Dolphin weakens but disrupts travel in east China

Typhoon Dolphin, now weakened, continues to disrupt travel in eastern China on Monday. The storm caused heavy rain and flight cancellations, with over a million people evacuated over the past few days. Authorities have issued the least severe typhoon alert after the weather system made two landfalls along Zhejiang province's coast.

Shanghai's two main passenger airports saw 943 flights cancelled, and public transport services were suspended in the city. However, some eastern Chinese cities, like Ningbo, resumed flight operations midday but warned of potential delays due to the storm's lingering effects. Northern China also faces extreme weather, with five Beijing districts issuing red alerts for heavy rain.

Typhoon Dolphin prompted evacuations of over 900,000 people in Wenzhou, more than 1,500 shelters in Ningbo, and more than 150,000 evacuations in Fujian. Beijing districts were also on alert for landslide and flood risks. Scientists warn that extreme weather events will intensify due to climate change, despite China's status as the world's biggest emitter of greenhouse gases and its commitment to carbon neutrality by 2060.
