Ukraine's Zelenskiy says up to 50,000 North Korean troops to be deployed in Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has announced that up to 50,000 North Korean soldiers may be deployed in Russia to support Pyongyang's ally. This figure exceeds the previous estimate of 30,000 North Korean troops, reported in July. Zelenskiy did not disclose the source of this information. He added that Ukraine discovered some North Korean missiles on its territory, but did not specify their locations.

The Ukrainian leader emphasized that North Korea would continue to enhance its military capabilities, obtaining licenses from Russia and acquiring various military tools. He urged South Korea to provide closer cooperation with Ukraine, particularly in areas where Ukraine is experiencing shortages, such as air defense systems. Ukraine is open to collaborating on the Drone Deal and other potential deals, according to Zelenskiy.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un signed a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty in June 2024, which includes a mutual assistance provision in case of external aggression. North Korea has already sent an estimated 14,000 troops to Russia's Kursk Region in 2024, aiding Moscow in repelling a significant Ukrainian offensive.

Currently, North Korea has reportedly deployed a missile unit to western Russia, potentially equipped with 120 ballistic missiles and six launchers for strikes against Ukraine. Ukraine faces a shortage of advanced air defenses, and Russia has sought to exploit this vulnerability by utilizing more ballistic missiles, which are challenging to intercept.

The North Korean Embassy in Russia did not immediately comment on the matter, and South Korea's Foreign Ministry did not respond to a request for comment outside of business hours.
