Global sexual health: Why communal knowledge about pleasure and well-being matters

For decades, discussions and decisions about access to contraception, abortion, maternal health care, HIV prevention and treatment, comprehensive sexuality education, gender equity and protection from sexual violence have largely flowed in one direction: from the Global North to the Global South.

Global discussions on sexual health have traditionally flowed from wealthier nations towards poorer regions, with researchers, donors, and international organizations dictating priorities and defining success metrics. However, this imbalance has resulted in limited attention to pleasure, desire, and community-defined notions of sexual well-being. Despite significant investments, numerous sexually transmitted infections persist, and a substantial portion of women still lack access to effective contraception.

This muscle acts as a gate, opening to allow food to move from the esophagus to the stomach and then closing to prevent food and acid from flowing back out.

When the LES opens too frequently or becomes weak, stomach acid can ascend into the esophagus, causing the characteristic burning feeling.
