Selangor mulls appeal after High Court finds authorities liable for 2021 Taman Sri Muda floods

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 30 — The Selangor government is mulling the possibility of appealing a recent High Court ruling that held multiple parties responsible for the negligence during the 2021 Taman Sri Muda floods. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari stated that the state will first consult the State Legal Adviser before making a final decision on the matter, according to Berita Harian.

This comes after the High Court ruled in favor of 50 residents from Taman Sri Muda who filed a lawsuit against the federal government, the Selangor Department of Irrigation and Drainage, and the Shah Alam City Council for losses incurred during the catastrophic floods in December 2021. The court found all three defendants guilty of negligence and related failures which significantly contributed to the residents' financial losses.

They are seeking RM3,767,148.51 in compensatory damages, alongside general and aggravated damages. The High Court has set October 6 for a case management hearing to assess the damages. Taman Sri Muda, located in Shah Alam, was one of the regions most severely impacted by the December 2021 floods, which caused rapid water rise and stranded residents.
