Selangor mulls appeal after High Court finds authorities liable for 2021 Taman Sri Muda floods

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 30 — The Selangor government is deliberating on whether to appeal a High Court decision holding the federal government and two state authorities responsible for negligence in the 2021 Taman Sri Muda floods. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari stated that the state will first consult with the State Legal Adviser before determining the next course of action.

The High Court recently ruled in favor of 50 Taman Sri Muda residents who had filed a lawsuit against the government and several public authorities, including the Selangor Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) and Shah Alam City Council (MBSA), over the financial losses they incurred during the catastrophic floods in December 2021.

The court found all the defendants liable for negligence and associated failures that contributed to the residents' suffering. They are seeking RM3,767,148.51 in special damages, alongside general and aggravated damages. The court scheduled October 6 for case management to assess the damages. The Taman Sri Muda area in Shah Alam experienced some of the most severe impacts of the December 2021 floods, with residents finding themselves cut off as floodwaters rose rapidly.
