Techie Kavin caste killing case: Madras High Court quashes charge sheet against parents of prime accused Surjith

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has dismissed the charge sheet against Saravanan and Krishnakumari, parents of Surjith, the prime accused in the Kavin Selvaganesh caste killing case. Kavin, a Scheduled Caste individual from Arumugamangalam near Eral in Thoothukudi district, was murdered on July 27, 2025, in Tirunelveli.

Surjith, Subhashini's younger brother, was arrested on charges of murder. The charge sheet against Saravanan and Krishnakumari stated that they had learned about Kavin's relationship with their daughter in 2016-17. Later, Saravanan cautioned his daughter, spoke to Kavin over the phone during 2018-19, and Krishnakumari had also contacted Kavin's mother over the phone, informing her about the relationship and warning her.

The court dismissed the petition filed by Surjith's cousin, Jayapal, who is accused of destroying clothes, mobile phone, and the two-wheeler number plate. The court noted the absence of eyewitnesses, CCTV footage, photographs, videos, or any electronic material supporting the meeting between Surjith, Saravanan, and Krishnakumari.

The court also observed that the prosecution's material showed Saravanan went to the police within 16 minutes of receiving information from Surjith and named him as the son who committed the murder.
