Sabah police monitoring concerns over Israel Houghton concert

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah police are monitoring concerns over a concert by US gospel singer Israel Houghton, set to occur at multiple locations in the city from October 22 to 25. Commissioner Jauteh Dikun mentioned that the police have received two reports following public reactions to the concert, which has been promoted on social media.

The concerns include sensitivities over the singer's name and his alleged support for Israel. Reportedly, many people are unhappy with the concert's timing and content, deeming it inappropriate. Jauteh informed the press that the state government has not yet received an official application for the concert, despite its promotion with specific details.

Consequently, this has caused confusion, as the concert has been advertised but no formal application has been submitted to the state government or a request for police opinions. Nevertheless, Jauteh assured that the police would continue monitoring the situation and recording statements from relevant parties. He advised those involved to consider the public's sensitivities at present and, if an official application is submitted to the state government, police would provide advice based on the prevailing situation and public reaction.

However, the final decision regarding the concert's holding is at the state government's discretion. The concert's organizer remains to be decided by the state government, which will inform the applicant. Jauteh emphasized the police's priority to prevent any public sensitivities from disrupting public order.
