Howrah station area set for a facelift with skywalk, subways, and 13-Storey Hub

The area surrounding Howrah Railway Station is set for a major infrastructure transformation, according to plans from the West Bengal government. A 13-story mixed-use complex will replace the existing bus terminal, housing a bus terminus on the bottom level and various amenities on higher floors. These include retail outlets, a shopping mall, a food court, an auditorium, affordable air-conditioned lodging, and a multiplex.

A skywalk, proposed by the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA), will link the complex to the station, initially extending to Platform 8 of Howrah station. The redevelopment project also involves a Rs 45-crore upgrade to two subways, with work expected to commence after Durga Puja and conclude before Puja 2027. The entire operation, estimated at Rs 250-300 crore, aims to alleviate congestion and improve passenger experience in an area where roughly 60 lakh passengers travel daily.

Officials acknowledge the poor condition of the area, noting issues such as poor road maintenance, garbage accumulation, and open urination, prompting calls for comprehensive civic improvements.
