Trump says he rejected Iranian proposal to reopen Strait of Hormuz and end hostilities

On Saturday, US President Donald Trump announced that he had turned down an offer from Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and put an end to the ongoing hostilities. In a statement to reporters at the White House in Washington, DC, Trump declared, "I reject their proposal ... I rejected their deal." Iran had proposed this initiative during the UN General Assembly in New York, suggesting that it could bring about a cessation of the conflict within a week.

Tehran claimed that the proposal had been relayed to Washington through Qatari intermediaries. Trump attributed their proposal to their dire situation, stating, "They want to make a deal to open the Hormuz Strait immediately because they're losing so badly." He added, "We're winning tremendously." Trump further explained, "What they want to do is immediately open the Hormuz Strait... because they have no money coming in, because they get their money from the Hormuz Strait."
