Trump rejects Iran proposal for deal to reopen Hormuz

US President Donald Trump dismissed Iran's proposal on Saturday aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial trade route for global energy supply. The proposal, which called for an immediate end to hostilities and the release of frozen Iranian assets, was rejected by Trump, who said he "likes making deals too." Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that the proposal had been developed in coordination with Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, and would include a cessation of hostilities across the Middle East, including in Lebanon.

The conditions for the truce were the same as those outlined in a memorandum of understanding signed between the US and Iran earlier this year. Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff earlier in the week to discuss the proposal. Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan criticized the international community for failing to protect the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab al-Mandab, emphasizing their importance to global energy security.

Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov offered to contribute to stabilizing the region. Iran's rejection of the proposal stems from past experiences and a lack of trust in the United States.
