Trump rejects Iran’s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz

U.S. President Donald Trump dismissed Iran's proposal on Saturday to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within a week, contingent upon the U.S. meeting specific conditions. This came as Iranian media outlets reported that Iran's president had departed New York following the United Nations gathering of global leaders, which included Iran's indirect negotiations with the United States.

Saudi Arabia also claimed to have intercepted a missile it attributed to Iran-backed Houthis in neighboring Yemen. Iran had proposed reopening the strait and resuming talks on its nuclear program seven days later if the U.S. lifted its naval blockade of Iranian ports, waived sanctions on Iranian oil sales, and observed a ceasefire, including in Lebanon.

However, Trump rejected the offer, stating that Iran was proposing the deal because it was "losing so badly." During a press conference outside the White House, Trump added that he, too, would consider a deal, but it would not be acceptable to him. Iran had effectively closed the strait following the U.S. and Israel's attacks on the Islamic Republic in late February, resulting in a marked decrease in the number of ships passing through due to Iranian threats and attacks on vessels in the waterway.
