Hundreds of flights cancelled as Typhoon Dujuan nears Japan

Typhoon Dujuan forced the cancellation of more than 275 flights in Japan on Monday, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported. All Nippon Airways cancelled 140 domestic flights, while Japan Airlines grounded 120 domestic and 15 international flights. The storm, accompanied by high winds, also led to the early closure of one of the world's largest video game trade fairs in the capital and knocked out power for thousands.

The JMA warned on Sunday that rain and winds were expected to intensify before the typhoon's arrival, with potential record-breaking rainfall. The total rainfall through Tuesday could surpass the average monthly rainfall for September, resulting in heavy rain previously unseen. The typhoon's wind speeds were measured at 144 kmph as it approached Hachijojima, one of Tokyo's farthest islands.

On Monday, over 4,000 households in Chiba, adjacent to Tokyo, were left without power. The JMA and local authorities cautioned residents about heavy rain and possible landslides. Railway operators in Tokyo and surrounding regions suspended services on certain lines. Tokyo Game Show, the world's biggest video game trade fair that commenced on Thursday, was called off on Monday, its final day.

Additionally, a major outdoor music festival and a baseball match, both scheduled for Chiba, were also cancelled.
