Weather tracker: Japanese islands brace for Dujuan to become a typhoon again

A powerful typhoon, dubbed Dujuan, is set to approach Japan's eastern coastline on Monday, prompting flood and landslide warnings across the nation. The storm is expected to pass near Tokyo's metropolitan area later in the day, with winds reaching speeds of 144 kilometers per hour. Hachijojima, one of Tokyo's most remote islands, is currently experiencing Dujuan's closest proximity, with heavy rainfall already reported in parts of the Izu Islands and Chiba prefecture, just outside the capital.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has warned that conditions could deteriorate rapidly, with total rainfall through Tuesday potentially surpassing the average monthly rainfall for September, leading to record-breaking heavy rain.

Authorities have cautioned of a potential linear rain bands formation over central Japan and the Kanto region, including Tokyo and surrounding prefectures. These bands, characterized by heavy torrential rainfall over a narrow area for several hours, could exacerbate the risk of flash floods and landslides. Over 4,000 households in Chiba remain without power, while an equestrian eventing competition in the central prefecture of Aichi, currently hosting the Asian Games, has been postponed until Tuesday.

The Tokyo Game Show, one of the world's largest video game trade fairs, was also halted ahead of its final day on Monday.

Dujuan's arrival may disrupt travel plans during Japan's Silver Week holiday, which began on Monday and typically sees a surge in domestic travel. Japan Airlines canceled 120 domestic and 15 international flights on Monday, while All Nippon Airways suspended 140 domestic flights. Some railway services have been suspended on certain lines in Tokyo and neighboring areas.
