Asian Games open with unity message after troubled build-up

The 20th Asian Games commenced in Japan on Saturday, heralding a message of unity amidst a troubled build-up to the multi-sport event which now boasts more athletes than the Olympics. Despite this, the 30,000-capacity stadium in Nagoya was notably filled with empty seats during the subdued opening ceremony, which featured a heart-shaped main stage. International Olympic Committee President Kirsty Coventry attended the event, alongside Japan's Emperor and Empress.

The competition will span over 40 sports over the course of ten days, concluding on October 4th. Japan and Aichi prefectures will host the Games, which also serve as a qualifier for the 2028 Olympics in seven sports. Organizers have had to accommodate more than 11,000 athletes and 6,000 officials, resulting in a mix of temporary container-style huts, hotels, and the cruise ship Costa Serena for housing.

The event faced challenges such as a flood and an impending typhoon, with some athletes stranded at the airport and complaints about the quality of the accommodations.

Diplomatic incidents included North Korea's national anthem being played for South Korea's men's hockey team. Two-time Asian Games silver medallist Zahra Kiani, representing Iran, aims to win another medal in the Chinese martial art of wushu by watching videos of Chinese athletes. The Olympic Council of Asia emphasized that the Games, featuring 45 countries and territories, come at a crucial time, symbolizing unity against conflicts in Asia and the Middle East.
