University of Ghana athletes return from 12th FASU Games after medal success in Cairo

University of Ghana athletes returned to Accra after a successful performance at the 12th FASU Games in Cairo, Egypt. Upon their arrival at the Kotoka International Airport, they were greeted by supporters and university officials at 13:00 GMT on Friday. The team secured a total of 23 medals, comprising 10 gold, eight silver, and five bronze across athletics, badminton, and tennis.

This significant improvement marks a contrast to the university's performance in 2022's FASU Games held in Nairobi, Kenya, where University of Ghana won 16 medals.

In Cairo, the men’s athletics team won gold medals in the long jump, 110m hurdles, 400m, 4x100m relay, 400m hurdles, and 4x400m relay. Meanwhile, the women's athletics team contributed three gold medals in the javelin, 200m, and 4x400m relay. The university also claimed another gold in the 400m mixed medley event, bringing the total number of gold medals to 10.

Head coach Mary Zambila Yahaya revealed that the decision to concentrate on athletics, tennis, and badminton was a deliberate strategy aimed at maximizing the team's medal prospects. These three disciplines were chosen with the intention of maximizing the team's medal prospects. UG's sports director, Dr. Austin W. Luguterah, praised the athletes' performance, stating that the team's success represented Ghana on the continental stage.
