Asian Games open with unity message after troubled build-up

The 20th Asian Games kicked off in Japan on Saturday in Nagoya with a message of unity, amid a troubled build-up to the multi-sport event which boasts more athletes than the Olympics. Despite a colourful opening ceremony featuring a giant heart-shaped stage, the stadium sat with empty seats, leaving many spectators underwhelmed.

The Emperor and Empress were greeted respectfully as they took their seats, alongside International Olympic Committee president Kirsty Coventry. The Games, spanning over 40 sports until October 4th, will see over 11,000 athletes and 6,000 officials compete in 7 sports, aiming to earn spots in the 2028 Olympics. However, the event has been marred by numerous issues, including a lack of a traditional athletes' village, subpar accommodation for competitors, and a record deluge that flooded parts of Nagoya.

Typhoon threats loom in the coming days, causing further potential disruptions. Some athletes have had to deal with transport failures and unsatisfactory living conditions in container-style huts, hotels, and the cruise ship Costa Serena. The Olympic Council of Asia emphasized the Games' significance in demonstrating Asian unity during a time of political conflicts.

Though ticket sales were claimed to be complete, rows of empty seats remained. Despite the challenges, China aims to reclaim the top spot in the medal count, following their impressive 201 gold and 383 medal haul in 2023. Emerging talents like 15-year-old Indian cricketer Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and 13-year-old Chinese swimmer Yu Zidi will add to the spectacle, alongside regional favorites like sepak takraw and kabaddi, as well as new additions like eSports, breakdancing, and BMX cycling.
