Asian Games open with unity message after troubled build-up

The 20th Asian Games commenced in Japan on Saturday, radiating a message of unity amidst a tumultuous build-up. The multi-sport spectacle boasted more participants than the Olympics, with 11,000 athletes and 6,000 officials stretching organizers to their limits. Accommodation challenges led to the absence of a traditional athletes' village, with competitors staying in temporary container huts, hotels, and the Costa Serena cruise ship.

A record deluge last week inundated parts of Nagoya, while a looming typhoon threatens additional disruption. Empty seats filled the 30,000-capacity stadium in Nagoya during the subdued opening ceremony, which unfolded in the shape of a massive heart. Emperor and Empress were received respectfully as they took their seats, alongside International Olympic Committee president Kirsty Coventry.

The first gold medal is expected on Sunday morning, likely in men's individual triathlon. The event in Nagoya and Aichi prefecture will host athletes from over 40 sports before concluding on October 4, with the promise of global stars and rising prodigies. Regional sports such as sepak takraw, kabaddi, eSports, breakdancing, BMX cycling, padel, and MMA will debut at the Asian Games, which began in 1951.

Notable competitors include Philippine tennis sensation Alexandra Eala and rising stars such as 15-year-old Indian cricketer Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and 13-year-old Chinese swimmer Yu Zidi. North Korea, aiming to bring joy to Marshal Kim Jong Un, will field more than 100 athletes across 14 sports.
