Police corporal charged with murder over Central University student’s death

General Corporal Robert Katey Koranteng, a police officer in Accra, has been charged with murder in connection with the death of 23-year-old Central University law student Ivan Apprey Baidoo. The incident allegedly occurred on August 27, 2026, when Baidoo was riding a motorbike to play football. According to prosecutors, Koranteng, who was on duty at a traffic intersection, pursued the motorbike after the rider, Samuel Wesley Arthur, failed to stop at a red light.

After passing the Old Tollbooth on the Tema Motorway, Koranteng allegedly kicked the motorbike, causing Baidoo to lose control and crash into a concrete barrier. Baidoo was pronounced dead at Tema General Hospital, while Arthur was treated and discharged. A postmortem revealed that Baidoo's cause of death was haemorrhagic shock due to blunt trauma. Koranteng was arrested on September 12 and is due to be buried on September 19, 2026.
