Man fatally shot in Jaffa, Israel Police investigating suspected murder intent

General Corporal Robert Katey Koranteng, a 34-year-old officer with the Ghana Police Service, has been charged with murder in connection with the death of 20-year-old Central University law student Ivan Apprey Baidoo. The charge, filed on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, stems from an incident that occurred on August 27, 2026, when Baidoo was struck by a motorbike while riding to a football match.

According to prosecutors, the incident took place at the UPSA traffic intersection, where the rider, Samuel Wesley Arthur, allegedly disregarded a red light. Koranteng, who was patrolling the intersection, reportedly pursued the motorbike and signaled Arthur to stop. However, the prosecution claims that Arthur continued through the Okponglo traffic light and Tetteh Quarshie Interchange before crashing into a concrete barrier after the Old Tollbooth on the Tema Motorway.

Koranteng allegedly kicked the motorbike during the pursuit, causing Baidoo to lose control and crash. Despite the Good Samaritans' efforts to transport Baidoo and Arthur to Tema General Hospital, Baidoo was pronounced dead upon arrival. A postmortem examination revealed that his death was caused by haemorrhagic shock resulting from blunt trauma to the chest and abdomen.

The Homicide Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department now leads the investigation, with the Police Professional Standards Bureau also reviewing the officer's conduct. Koranteng was arrested on September 12 and subsequently arraigned at the Adabraka District Court in Accra. His trial is currently ongoing.
